01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Billing itself around sushi and sake, Kotohogi invites guests to settle in over a drink well before the first nigiri arrives. The chalkboard and menu are laden with seasonal seafood and warm drinking snacks, making it easy to assemble a relaxed meal dish by dish alongside each pour.

A natural opening order is the signature iwashi maki, fresh sardine tightly rolled with fragrant herbs and seasonings. The kitchen's deft hand with heat is equally evident across the hot dishes, from fluffy, made-to-order satsuma-age fishcakes and savory grilled tuna collar cuts to fresh seafood tossed with viscous gagome kelp.

Once the starters wind down, the sushi takes center stage in classic Edomae fashion, shaped over compact morsels of shari seasoned with aged red vinegar. The eight-piece omakase comes in Jo and Tokujo tiers tailored to the day's market catch, pacing diners through seasonal white-fleshed fish, silver-skinned varieties, shellfish, and prawns. Slender rolls accented with salted heshiko mackerel or pungent narazuke pickles keep the drinking rhythm going, capped off by a restorative bowl of clear shijimi clam broth.

The sake cellar is just as thoughtfully considered, balancing local Kyoto bottlings with respected names from across Japan. Chilled offerings share equal footing with labels that shine at room temperature or gently warmed—including Yorokobi Gaijin, Hanatomoe, and Furosen—and the hosts are glad to suggest a pour tailored to whatever dish is on the counter.

Seating is limited to an intimate counter of roughly 7 places, offering a front-row view of every dish being assembled with practiced rhythm. Given the small capacity and steady local following, reserving ahead is strongly advised.
